Course contents :  
Thematic approaches to non-constructed space in the urban environment :
  • Ephemeral gardens, commentary on a town: Interpretation of a town through its empty spaces. Translation of permanent structures in public spaces, parks and gardens.
  • The system of public spaces: Identification of significant spaces.
  • Creating a public space: history of a project, from programming to management.
  • Specific means of composing non-built public spaces, parks and gardens.
  • Revealed through gardens, the idea of nature as the basis of all cultures.
Learning outcomes of the course :  
Adopting a centrifugal view: using conventional constructed space, consider the range of non-constructed lived-in spaces and define to what extent and by what means they are architectured.
Confront other scales and other means of action in the lived-in space.
To define the limits and conditions under which the field of architectural intervention on these spaces can be developed, and articulate this in relation to other disciplines.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :  
Theoretical presentations and thematic seminars based on concrete cases.
Assimilation and integration of theoretical knowledge through a case study carried out in groups

Recommended or required readings :  
Course notes: analytical documents distributed throughout the seminars and workshops.
Assessment methods and criteria :  
Presentation of the teams' research work through a seminar.
This work will be assessed according to the following criteria :
  • use and application of theoretical elements taught in class
  • ability to understand and analyse a real context
  • mode of communicating research to the whole group.
