| The course focusses essentially upon workshop research, as an introduction to town planning.
Students will study practical cases emerging from the real requirements of a community.
Students will have to conduct urban readings, based upon which they will learn how to debate, develop and strengthen urban solutions: understanding urban challenges of places in terms of potentials or deficiencies; confronting different actors on the ground and considering the interests and needs expressed; attempting to decode unexpressed needs or desirables.
The course gives students the opportunity to practice progressive questioning, which is useful for building a project philosophy resulting in the articulation of intentions in the form of drawings. These drawings become an active part of the discussions (exercise in participation) which can lead to the progressive transcription of formal arrangements.
Based on simple problems relating to well-defined spatial elements, such as the layout of a square, students will go on to read the environment in all its dimensions (morphological, social, economic, political) and its future transcription.
The urban project exercise should lead to better understanding of this complex discipline which is often presented as overly abstract or technical. Materials in the same discipline, provided simultaneously, constitute the cultural and operational baggage which students can refer to throughout the project. |
