Course contents :
The anthropology of childhood is constructed in different ways according to academic traditions (EU, Great Britain, France, Germany, etc.). New emerging currents, particularly in Latin America, have been involved in the short history of this developing field. We will look at this by focussing on different themes and/or approaches (social and symbolic construction of the child, status of children, child development, daily life, marginalised children, the concept of the 'child-actor', childlike cultures, concepts of "agency", the position of the child in the life-cycle, etc.) in light of work conducted in different societies both in the South and in the North. The methodological, theoretical and epistemological questions raised by the anthropology of childhood will also be addressed and compared. More globally, this involves grasping what the anthropology of childhood can contribute to a better knowledge of children's worlds, the societies being studied and mankind in general.
Learning outcomes of the course :
Students will acquire a good historical knowledge of this developing field and the reasons for different developments in the EU, Great Britain and France as well as emerging trends. They will understand, through the examples studied in class, as well as conferences, seminars and study days, and readings, how to develop a position on methodological, theoretical and epistemological questions raised by the different approaches implemented in the publications studied. They will also be able to reconstruct and analyse ethnographical information produced during a field study focussing on children.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
None.
Two awareness raising sessions on the anthropological approach will be organised for students who are not enrolled on the Masters in Anthropology course. These sessions will be based on a portfolio of specific readings.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
The course will take place in the first term.
Recommended or required readings :
Course material: texts, conferences, films, etc. Students will be obliged to read one publication, articles and extracts from publications and will receive a selective bibliography and a filmography as well as a list of sites (written and video sources).
Assessment methods and criteria :
Students will give a presentation on a theme which has been predefined based on readings from the portfolio and one publication, as well as a final written report on their ethnography; anthropology students will also have to present part of this report orally during a Methodology seminar organised during class; students from other disciplines will be required to attend this day and can present this exercise should they so wish (instructions about these three exercises will be given in class).
Contacts :
I meet with students between 12.30pm and 2.30pm on Tuesdays (Elodie.Razy@ulg.ac.be).
