Course contents :  
This course aims to develop some contributions of the main theories of learning for instruction. It also discusses some characteristics of adolescents and their possible impact on learning.
The course is made up of five chapters:
I. Theories of learning: some history
II. Some contributions of behaviorism to teaching
III. Some contributions of cognitivism to teaching
IV. Some contributions of (socio)-contructivism to teaching
V. Some characteristics of adolescents and their possible impact on learning
Learning outcomes of the course :  
1) Discovering and understanding the foundations of classical theories of educational psychology and some key concepts of these theories (types of knowledge, metacognition, problem-based situations, cognitive conflict, scaffolding, etc..).
2) Discovering and understanding some characteristics of adolescents and young adults.
3) Analysing teaching practices in light of theoretical perspectives and core concepts of these theories.
4) Analysing the impact of certain characteristics of adolescents and young adults on their commitment to school and their learning.
5) Being able to take advantage of the theoretical contributions to analyze one's practice and to design improvements and innovations in teaching.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :  
None.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :  
Face-to-face course (15h) Theoretical course in amphitheater: discovering of the course contents through explanations of the core concepts and illustrative examples (mainly ex-cathedra + personal reflection + questions/answers) ó mainly aims 1 & 2
Besides the face-to-face course - Reading of a collection of texts: deepening the understanding of the concepts studied during the course ó aims 1 & 2 - Realization of two individual reports: one aiming at analyzing one's own teaching practices in light of theory: the other aims at conceiving improvements and innovations for one's own teaching (aims 3, 4 & 5). As far as possible, feedbacks on these works will be provided during the school year. - Exam preparation (aims 1 to 4) with a training test.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :  
Face-to-face: 6 courses of 2h30 in amphitheater - Thursday from 18h to 20h30 (first course 22/09/2011)

Recommended or required readings :  
A copy of the PowerPoint will be available for students on myUlg.
A compilation of texts will be available in Point de vue.
Assessment methods and criteria :  
The evaluation consists of four parts :
  • Two parts to do in advance (open book) and to hand the day of the exam ( Connected with aims 3, 4 and 5 of the course)- Part1 (20% of the qualification) production of two "Recordings brought by theory"
- Part 2 (20% of the qualification) production of a "Conception and justification of an innovation"
  • Two parts in a face-to-face exam in January (without book or notes)
- Part3 (30% of the qualification) <=> Evaluation of the knowledge and the understanding of key concepts of the course (Multiple choice questionnaire) (Connected to aims 1 and 2). - Part 4 (30% of the qualification) <=> Analysis of teaching/learning situations in light of theories studied in the course (Open questions) (Connected to aims 3 and 4 of the course.)

It's compulsory to hand the works the day of the exam to complete the course and get a qualification.
Organizational remarks :  
Students who hold a degree in psychology or Science Education don' have to do the course.
