| Course contents : | The developmental speech and language treatment placement is the first work experience for students in speech-language pathology. This internship will be supervised by a tutor speech-language pathologist, proposed by the University teachers. At the beginning of the placement, the tutor and the student will consult about the supervision that will be realized. The supervision aims to enable the participant to gradually shift from observer status to that of semi-autonomous actor. Ideally, the supervision of the trainee will be regularly adapted to meet the needs of the student. |
 |
| Course objective : | Objectives of this placement are determined from the standards in Speech and Language Pathology (Cf. http://www.logoclinique.ulg.ac.be/enseignement.php). The placement aims to develop two clinical skills by the student: "Assessing a patient" and "Treating a patient (...) ". In addition, the placement aims to address a range of resources (mainly skills and professional attitudes) associated with cross-curricular competencies "Establishing a professional relationship" and "Developing the expertise (...) " |
 |
| Organization : | The placement is 300 hours long. The trainee must perform 240 hours of training and participate in a seminar at University for 60 hours.
Accounting for the training hours is not left to the trainee. It is the tutor who will note the number of hours completed on a grid developed for this purpose. These recommendations are important to avoid any misunderstanding or irregularity in accounting for placement hours. |
 |
| Assessment : | The evaluation of the students' performance in the placement will be done through a grid based on a competency framework. The trainee must download two copies of the grid on WebCT and give one of them to his tutor.
1) At mid-course: Formative evaluation in three stages:
* Self-assessment by the trainee.
* Assessment of the trainee by the tutor using the same criteria.
* Consultation meeting between the student and tutor, to compare opinions and to readjust the objectives of the placement (or to set new objectives).
2) End of course: Formative and certifying assessment
* Formative Evaluation: as at mid-stage
* Transmission complete evaluation document (tutor and student) by the trainee to the university. The tutor will also give a qualitative assessment of the placement (Excellent, Very Good, Good, S, ...).
* The appraisal by the tutor will be converted to a numeric grade (by the University teaching staff), and will account for 40% of the final score.
A remaining 40% will be allocated to the placement report, assessed by the University teaching staff.
Finally, active participation in the seminars will be valued at 20% of the final grade.
The student will give his report to the University teaching team, at the latest, by 1 June for the first session or August 15 for the second session.
Note about spelling: if the report for the first session contains more than 10 spelling errors, it will be rejected and must be returned in the second session. With each new report, a point will be removed from the final grade of the placement. If the report is made in the second session that contains more than 10 spelling errors, 2 points will be removed from the student's final score for the course. |
