Course contents :  This course continues the English language training of Veterinary students by adding:
  • the oral understanding of veterinary information, and
  • a methodology of critical appraisal of scientific information.

This course continues the English language training of Veterinary students by adding the oral understanding of veterinary information.
Course objective :

The objectives of this course are twofold:
  • develop the understanding of scientific information presented orally, and
  • reinforce the students' knowledge of the vocabulary of veterinary English through various listening comprehension and note-taking exercises.

Organization :  The English Listening Practice module of the course consists of a theoretical introduction, graded listening comprehension exercises on DVD, and an exam that will verify the students' ability to take notes during a short lecture and answer precise questions on the topic of the lecture.

The Introduction to Critical Analysis of Scientific Information part of the course consists of a theoretical introduction (4 hours) in amphitheater and a series of analytical readings of scientific papers.

Practice of English

The English Listening Practice module of the course consists of a theoretical introduction, graded listening comprehension exercises on DVD, and an exam that will verify the students' ability to take notes during a short lecture and answer precise questions on the topic of the lecture.
Written notes :  
  • A DVD English Learning Practice with the listening material and notes for listening comprehension module will be distributed after the theoretical introduction lesson and will be available from the Faculty Library,
  • the course notes and didactic material for the Introduction to the Critical Analysis of Scientific Information module will be available from the Library Website.

  • A DVD English Learning Practice with the listening material and notes for listening comprehension module will be distributed after the theoretical introduction lesson and will be available from the Faculty Library.
Assessment :  The students' ability to accurately understand veterinary information given orally will be assessed through a compulsory listening comprehension and note-taking test.
The students will be asked to listen to a 15-minute veterinary talk and answer MCT questions (and possibly a few short-answer open questions) based on the notes they have taken.
The MCT questionnaire will also include knowledge and application questions on the critical appraisal of scientific literature.

Practice of English
