| Course contents : | The course introduces students to various aspects of literary translation, including such professional considerations as contracts. This first part will focus on fiction and literature for children and 'young adults'. We either produce original translations or examine and compare existing translations. |

| Course objective : | In the various fields that are introduced (beyond specific constraints) we come up against similar demands and obstacles: translators have to establish the type of discourse and register, and to become sufficiently part of the source text to "hear" the proper forms in the target text. Distance in time and use of dialects raise specific difficulties.
Comparing several versions of the same text can be a fruitful exercice.
All literary texts do not call for the same treatment, and there may be various reasons to "betray" the original text (apart from gross ignorance). |

| Prerequisites : | An excellent knowledge of French (target language) and a good knowledge of English. |
|
| Organization : | 2nd term in the first year of the Master's degree, on Thursday from 5 to 7. See http://cipl82.philo.ulg.ac.be/horaires |

| Assessment : | The students' competence in literary translation can only be assessed on works they have done at home, namely four test translations of two to six pages from four different works introduced in class. The oral examination provides feedback on those tests. |
