Bachelor in physics, 3rd yearFirst semester3
One-year preliminary programme leading to the Master in Space SciencesFirst semester3
Holder(s) :  Paul Gérard
Language :  French language
Course contents :  The course is devoted to the fundamentals of the probability theory and gives an introduction to statistical data analysis.

Probability theory: discussion about the meaning of the word "probability", random events, Kolmogorov's axiomatic definition of probability, independence of events, conditional probability, sensitivity and specificity of a binary test, positive and negative predictive values, random variables and usual distributions, multivariate distributions, conditional distributions, independence, expectation and variance, conditional expectation and variance, linear regression, laws of great numbers, central limit theorems, characteristic function.

Introduction to statistics: populations and samples, descriptive statistics (graphical techniques, estimates of position and of dispersion, correlation and regression), sampling theory and estimation (confidence intervals), introduction to statistical tests.
Course objective :  To understand clearly and precisely the main mathematical notions of the theory of probability. To become familiar with the notion of statistical model and to learn some basic statistical methods.
Prerequisites :  Differential and Integral calculus, matrix algebra.
Workshops :  Exercices about the probability theory and its applications. Statistical treatment of real data. Introduction to the use of a statistical software (statistica).
Written notes :  A summary of the course is availaible.
