| Course contents : | I. Classification, general features and world-wide distribution of farm animals; geographical distribution of stockbreeding activities; classification of different models of stockbreeding. II.Usefulness of stockbreeding activities, environmental impacts and effects on human health. III. Basis of farm animal welfare and ethical view. IV. Surroundings of farm animals: classification of housing conditions; social effects, temperature stress; air chemical and physical quallity in relation to animal comfort; ambient hygiene; management of animal comfort. V. Main breeds of cattle, pigs and horses. VI. Stockbreeding structures. VII. Principles of farm animal breeding. VIII. Basis of milk production (dairy cow) : - lactation curve : milk, fat, proteins; factors of production; - milk quality : definitions and management; - milking systems. IX. Basis of bovine meat production: - types of cattle for meat production; - growth and development; - slaughter; from muscle to meat; - quantitative aspects of meat production; - carcass and meat quality. |

| Course objective : | To give a general survey of animal productions in the world and the basis of animal husbandry After completing the course the student is expected to - understand different aspects linked to modern farm animal productions around the world; - undertake to do a bibliographic study on a special topic in relation with farm animal breeding. |
