| Course contents : | While reflecting on the "youth" as a homogenous sociological group, this course explores the different forms of political participation and interest of the youth (16-30 y.). It endeavours to dismiss the stereotypes on the youth such as their apolitism or over-politicisation. Each year, a specific topic is studied to shed light on the concepts of political socialization, participation, generational cycles, mediatisation, or even on the definition of the object of politics and the ability to work with these concepts in Political Science. |
 |
| Prerequisites : | No prerequisite. Having followed SPOL-0087 (Political Socialisation: Theories and Methods) is certainly useful. |
 |
| Organization : | This year, the course is essentially based on the realisation of an empirical quantitative research project to measure if young people's entry into the job market modifies their political behaviour. After some introductory lectures, students construct their theoretical framework and define the questionnaire. All students then conduct their own survey among 30 young people (15 young people who are on the job market and 15 who are not). All individual data sets are then cumulated analysed by each student. Every student finally presents an analysis of the entire data set on a scientific poster. |
 |
| Assessment : | There are three course requirements.
1. Active participation in class is graded throughout the semester (presence in class, involvement in the survey, presentation of the poster in class). Each student is graded separately (there will not be any group work), but as the quality of the individual work depends on each student's effort, participation is carefully considered (40% of the final grade).
2. The poster itself, its visual quality, its compliance with the given directives, the quality and the analysis of the information are graded separately (20% of the final grade).
3. At the end of the semester, a paper synthesizing the work is submitted. This research report must present some previous research projects on the topic (theoretical framework), the hypotheses, a brief description of the field work and, more importantly, a complete analysis of the data collected. At least 15 pages (one interline and an half) plus a bibliography are expected. The report must show good knowledge of the topic and of research on youth and politics in general. The quality of the formal presentation of the report itself is also graded (40% of the final grade).
The second session will be a combination of the above requirements. |

- This course is run as a seminar. Therefore, students are required to participate actively and do the readings. The class participation is graded. It is the responsibility of the student to make sure, at the beginning of the semester, he or she is on the class schedule (deadlines for the texts and the comments). Students who won't be able to attend the meetings have to contact the professor in advance. A student who does not participate may get a "0" on this part of the final grade.
