Course contents :  Sociology had and has still a complex relationship with social critics, as shows for example the predominance, until recently, of a critical sociology, aiming to unveil mechanisms of domination about which actors themselves are inconscious. Luc Boltanski, notably, has kept away from this sociology (and particularly from Bourdieusian sociology) to develop a sociology of critics, taking actors' speech, their critical skills, more seriously.
This course aims to explore both critical sociology approachs and approachs pointing up critical abilities of actors. About this last ones, addition to pragmatic sociology, the course will be also about other approachs taking account critical activities, and more generally forms of resistance, accomplished by "common" actors, by "weaks", subjected to a more or less intensive domination. We can cite, among others, James C. Scott and his political anthropology of "arts of resistance", Arlette Farge and her history of french plebeian public opinion in 18th century or Michel De Certeau who, without studying directly social critics, has explored finely "arts de faire" (arts of action), ordinary tricks of users "supposed to be passive and disciplined".
Course objective :  Starting by the concept of social critics in a large acceptation, the course aims to initiate a sociological reflexion on the variety of forms of critics and resistance observable in our western contemporary societies, but also in other cultures and periods. Taking the form of a seminar, the course must also help students to develop their analytic and synthesis skills, both in their talks and during the discussions.
Organization :  Interactive teaching. General presentation of the problematic by the teacher during the two first lessons. Then, talks given by students (possibly prepared in group) followed by a discussion. An active participation of the students is necessary.
Written notes :  A bibliography will be given at the first lesson, but it will be possible for students to propose the presentation of other texts and other authors.
Assessment :  Oral examination
