| Course contents : | The Sociology of Work and Employment course aims to train students in the sociological analysis of work activities and situations, professional relations and forms of employment and employment statutes. |
|
| Organization : | This course is divided into two separate parts:
1) the sociology of work and professional relations;
2) the sociology of employment and unemployment.
The first part of the course is organised around the presentation and discussion of several themes central to the sociology of work: qualification, identities, collective negotiation, professional training, and middlemen in the labour market. The objective here is to discover the principal concepts and paradigms of the sociology of work based on the concrete problems that drive them (division, integration, regulation, etc.).
The second part focuses more specifically on the sociology of employment and unemployment. It presents and is structured around three theoretical approaches:
- the cognitive approach, centred on the reference systems of employment policies;
- the institutional approach, open to international comparison between the different employment systems;
- the pragmatic approach, which depends on the processes for implementing employment policies. |

| Written notes : | In terms of didactic support, students will rely mainly on a set of texts compiled during classes. |
|
| Assessment : | The intermediary assessment of the students' work will be based on individual work involving the revision of articles published in the "Sociologie du travail" magazine. This work must be handed in to the teacher before the January session. The final assessment of the students' work will consist of an oral exam organised in June and September, based on the course. |
