Deontology and Legal Organization of Medicine

The course presents the legal foundations and principles underlying medical activity and the specific dispositions of the deontology code which pertain to everyday medical practice.

Notions of deontology

The course exposes the juridical bases upon which medical activity and professional code of medical ethics rely. The different articles of this belgian code of deontology are discussed together with their implications in common medical practice

Prescription and interpretation of additional tests

The principles and guidelines (diagnostic, technical and ethical aspects) for prescription and interpretation of complementary assessments are presented. Applications are illustrated in internal medicine, surgery and pediatrics.

Medical psychology

The course insists on the importance of relational aspects in medecine. Medical psychology has for objective to add the humanistic dimension to the doctor-patient relationship. The human being should be integrated in his/her entirety according to a bio-psycho-social model taking into account the contributions of biology and medicine, the contributions of psychology and the contributions of social sciences.

The course covers particularly all aspects related to the communication with the patient.

The course comprises the following chapters: Introduction, Personality disorders with consequences on the attitude of the patient and recommandations for the doctor, the psychological effects of illness, the doctor-patient relationship, the techniques of interview with the patient, psychosomatic medicine, the bereavement, the doctor and incurable diseases, specific aspects in children and adolescents and psychotherapies.

The course aims to provide the following:
- the essential legal principles underlying any medical activity as well as the tools required to understand medical deontology,
- an in-depth understanding of the deontological concepts which allows the student to undertake practical activities in a hospital environment in a manner which is compatible with the deontological rules of the profession

Notions of deontology

The goal of the course is to provide the student with:
-the necessary legal bases for the practice of medical activity and for the understanding of medical ethics
-an in-depth knowledge of medical deontology which is necessary for the student starting his training period in hospitals, in keeping with the ethical rules of the profession

Understand the factors that may influence the values and the limits of a diagnostic assessment and learn to be critical about oneself in presccribing and interpreting such an assessment.

The course has for objective to provide to the student the theoretical bases needed for the analysis of the relationship and the practical skills necessary to address adequately the communication with the patient.

Apply the principles learned during the course to clinical situations seen in practical training during 1st and 2nd Master years.

Medical psychology

Practical work sessions are organised by small groups of about 10 students and led by a psychiatrist specialist in communication. They are conceived as role playing where a student plays the doctor and an another student the patient. Various situations are proposed such as: the first consultation, the referral to a specialist, the announcement of a severe illness, the attitude towards an inadequate request... The various possibilities are analysed by the group which proposes useful adaptations which are debated with the psychiatrist.

Oral courses presented by two lecturers.
Professeur BOXHO introduces the legal aspects of medical activity, which also underlie the code of medical deontology. Professeur BOUFFIOUX) presents the principles embedded in the code of deontology.

Notions of deontology

Oral lessons given by two entitled professors.
One of them (Prof. BOXHO) exposes the juridical bases of medical activity upon which the professional code of ethics rely.
The second one (Prof. BOUFFIOUX) makes a review of the different articles of the belgian medical code of deontology and illustrates by factual examples.

Medical psychology

The course is organised during the first semester of first Doctorate and is part of module 1. The theoretical course comprises 10 H with 1H or 1H30/week. The course is based on the presentation of video recordings of doctor-patient interviews which serve as bases for a discussion with the students before synthetising the theoretical aspects. More specific aspects related to psychosomatics and psychotherapies are developped by Dr Jean-Marc TRIFFAUX and related to medical psychology in children and adolescents by Dr Christelle GERLACH.

Practical work sessions are organised by small groups of about 10 students per session of about 2H.

The questions of medical psychology are included in the multidisciplinary evaluation of module 1 of first Master in Medicine and comprise multiple choice questions, open questions with short answers and open questions. Obligatory presence in stages, practical courses and ARC.
