Course contents :  Studies of learning provide insights into the way experience influences our behavior on a permanent basis.

Basics associative learning have contributed to our understanding of the functions of the nervous system. They have provided useful models for different psychological disorders. They allowed the study of the cognition and intelligence evolution in various species. Finally, methods and analytical models developped to study conditioning and learning have been adopted in other investigation fields (infant cognition, behavioral neuroscience, psychopharmacology, behavioral medecine, behavioral toxicology, special education, etc.).
Course objective :  From the textbook : study of the elementary knowledge of associative learning through animal and human research.
  • Introduction to learning : history / definition / methodology.
  • Elicited behavior, habituation, sensitization.
  • Classical learning (foundations, mecanisms).
  • Instrumental conditioning (foundations, mecanisms).
  • Schedules of reinforcement and choice behavior.
  • Reward : experimental theories and analysis. Motivation.
  • Stimulus control of behavior.
  • Extinction of conditioned behavior.
  • Aversive control of behavior : avoidance and punishment.
From recent literature : study of one application using a conditioning technique. Underlying neurobiology of the examined learning process.
Organization :  30 hours, first semester.
