PESU0022-1  Audio-visual and higher education
Duration :  15h Th
Credits/ECTS :
Advanced Master in Pedagogy in Higher EducationToute l'année2
Holder(s) :  Dieudonné Leclercq
Language :  French language
Course contents :  1. Which perceptive mechanisms should be understood when we want to CONSTRUCT bi-media messages (images and text)?
2. What false "laws" on the effectiveness of images (and media) and unfertile research exist on the subject and why.
3. What does serious research say about the benefits of images for learning, and more precisely upon motivation and understanding? What is the value (added value) AND IF YES (OR NO) WHY? of colour as opposed to black and white? Of photographs as opposed to drawings? Of movement as opposed to a still image? Of questions before an image as opposed to after?
4. How to choose the most appropriate media (TV, poster, illustrated book? Computer animation etc.) in terms of content, objectives, audiences etc?
5. What methods and what instruments can be used to measure the scale of effects and to verify hypotheses such as: is Version B of a document better than Version A? Does Poster A have more impact than Poster B? etc.
Course objective :  Participants
  • can answer the questions above and
  • will have seen documents and experiments which marked their episodic and semantic memory.
Prerequisites :  To be motivated
Organization :  After an overview of the five main categories of questions set out in the general overview, the course will proceed with an analysis of cases and problem solving, many of which will have already been dealt with experimentally. Hence, the framework could be as follows:
  • The problem set: Institution X asks itself whether its audio-visual document (video, poster, brochure or Powerpoint ...) is achieving set objectives
  • The participants imagine the method(s) and device(s) which could be used to check.
  • Presentation of the method(s) which were used to address this problem
  • The participants anticipate - way(s) of presenting the results - the scale of these results
  • Presentation of results
  • Participants are invited to discuss the relevance, the extent and the potential of the results.
Please note that a minimum of five participants is required for this course to take place.
Written notes :  on-line WebCT course
Assessment :
  • Production of two pieces of work throughout the year (weight = 25% each)
  • Drafting a report (2-5 pages) explaining how this course was useful for your own reflections on your classes, what can be transferred and what you have been able to transfer and why (or why not). 50%.
The reflective report will be useful for participants wishing to adjust (improve) their own classes. It will be evaluated on the following criteria:
  • reference to theoretical elements and experiences covered in class
  • the reflexivity (questioning, critical analysis) which the piece of work demonstrates
  • format (APA references, respecting instructions, structure, quality of spelling and syntax)
This course amounts to 5% of the end-of-programme grade. A minimum grade of 10 on 20 is required to pass the course.
If you undertake Formasup in 2 years, optional courses with a grade under 10/20 obtained in year 1 cannot be retaken in year 2.
