MATH0476-1  Geometry
Duration :  30h Th, 15h Pr
Credits/ECTS :
Bachelor in physics, 1st yearSecond semester4
Holder(s) :  Michel Rigo
Language :  French language
Course contents :  Geometry naturally lies on Linear Algebra. Hence we first present real vector spaces (of finite dimension). In this lecture, we focus on
  • affine spaces
  • analytic geometric
  • Euclidian vector spaces
  • affine transformations
  • regular polyhedra
  • curves
  • surfaces
Course objective :  The aim is to present basic concepts from Geometry insisting on analytical aspects but also on the ability to handle abstract concepts.
Prerequisites :  Basic knowledge from secondary school is expected. Naturally, being trained to abstraction and mathematical reasoning is an advantage. The theory of matrix computations considered in the other mathematical courses should be mastered.
Workshops :  The practical sessions are mainly dedicated to solve exercises corresponding to the theory considered during the lecture sessions. These sessions are also useful to obtain extra informations or enlightenments on the concepts presented during the lecture sessions.
Organization :  The schedule will be communicated in due time.
Written notes :  Lecture notes are available (in french) and can be downloaded from http://www.discmath.ulg.ac.be/
Assessment :  The final examination consists of two parts: a written one and an oral one. The written part is devoted to the resolution of problems and exercises. The oral part is devoted to the theory (mainly proofs of theorems) but also includes direct applications of the theory. Once again, the expected knowledge needed for this examination will be officially announced during the year (usually in April).
