Course contents :  Mediaeval spheres of influence. As they were copied into manuscripts, mediaeval works of literature were subject to transformations which sometimes meant complete episodes being inserted into the original work. This changed the balance and the meaning of the narrative. It is this mediaeval inventiveness, its forms, its freedom and its rules which this course will try to measure.
Several kinds of narrative works will be considered: the Arthurien novel, the epic and the fabliau. We shall examine the diverse types of distance and compare them to their re-writings in other languages (Old Norse, Middle English or Middle German).

We shall study, at first, the novel Merlin (author: Robert de Boron).
Course objective :  What does "writing" mean in the Middle Ages ?
Prerequisites :  Old french language must be known.
Workshops :  - Comment on this work (strictly necessary): *Robert de Boron. Merlin, roman du XIIIe siècle, éd. critique par A. Micha, Droz, Genève. Translation in modern french: *Robert de Boron. Merlin, roman du XIIIe siècle, présenté, traduit et annoté par Alexandre Micha, GF-Flammarion, n°829.
