| Course contents : | The course « Learning the Speech Therapy Approach » is a clinical course using problem based learning methods, centered on contextualized acquisition and focused on the learner.
The "LSTA" are an adaptation of this concept to the specific context of Speech Therapy. Their aim is to develop the clinical reasoning of the students using general problem solving strategies and the development of a network linking organized knowledge and specific abilities. Students will be working in small groups, on clinical cases with a problematic situation to solve. With the help of a clinical tutor, they will work on the submitted problem together, according to different steps: analysis of the case, elaboration of an hypothesis, comment on complementary documents, gathering of the collected information, final solution of the problem. |

| Course objective : | Four categories of competences could be distingued :
Dynamic skills
- To increase the students' motivation in relation to the pratice of their profession, first in training courses, then during their future professional pratice.
- To allow each one to develop teamwork skills.
Strategic skills :
- To increase problem solving skills
- To be able to acknowledge their strengths and weaknesses
- To be aware of the complexity of the professional practice
- To allow each one to develop their critical, initiative and analytical skills
- To allow each one to develop teamwork skills.
- To allow meetings between students and clinicians
Reduction Skills :
- to help the students develop information gathering stategies
- to teach them how to extract the essence of a text, a test or any material presented, in a limited time
Specific Skills :
- To develop the assessment and remediation skills, in the areas of oral and written language disorders and arithmetics problems.

| Prerequisites : | PSYC2142-1. Language development LOGO1133-1. Language evaluation LOGO0008-1. Troubles and reeducation of spoken language. LOGO0009-1. Acquisition, troubles and reeducation of written language.
Knowledge of the tests included in the limited list of INAMI tests. |

| Organization : | Classes will take place twice a month, on Wednesday, 9.00 AM to 01.00 PM.
Each group will have to post a class summary on WebCT.
Attendance on class is required. Students may be absent once a year (whatever the reason). Then, they will have to carry out a personnal work on the topic of the missed class.
Formative assessment : work in 5 steps. Steps 1 to 4 : individual work on WebCT. Steps 5 : collective work. This formative assessment will help students to improve their language assessment skills.
Collective work, consisting to create a new language revalidation material : all along the year. |

| Written notes : | The texts used as resource documents will be available.
The WebCT plateform will be used for formative assessment, discussions about classes, and all information about LSTA. |

| Assessment : | The certificative assessment will be an oral one, which will take place on June 2009.
Works and practices done during the year have only a formative goal. They will help student to improve their clinical skills before the final certificative assesment. |
