Course contents :  Syntax is more abstract (less in direct relation with nonlinguistic reality) than phonology and morphology on the one hand, semantics on the other. However, most contemporary linguists agree on the central role of syntax in language.What is that role? How can syntactic phenomena be shown to exist (tests)? How can we describe them (syntactic categories, representations, rules and theories)? What is the relationship between syntax and lexicon? What is universal in syntax? Why? What types of syntactic phenomena can differ in the world's languages. Such problems will be dealt with in the course.
Prerequisites :  The students should have read the following pages by the third week (the book can be read in the library of the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures and in the library of the Faculty of Psychology): Marie-Noëlle Gary-Prieur: De la grammaire à la linguistique.L'étude de la phrase. Paris: Armand Colin, 1985. Pages 9-11, 24-26, 34, 38-39, 42-43 (starting at 2.5), 57-64, 71-73 (without 2. and 2.1 on page 73), 81 (the 6 lines under 3.), 85-87 (starting at 4.2), 117-126.
Workshops :  Texts will have to be read and exercises to be made at home; the exercises will be corrected and commented on in class and constitute a good preparation for the examination.
Master students who take the course in a "finalité approfondie" will have additional texts to read (including texts in English) and additional exercises te make.
Organization :  30 hours;

Written notes :  A few notes will be handed out. Texts to be read: to be determined.
