LCLA0004-1  Latin Exercises II
Duration :  30h Th, 45h Pr
Credits/ECTS :
Bachelor in Ancient Languages and Literatures, Classics, 2nd yearToute l'année12
Holder(s) :  Dominique Longrée
Language :  French language
Course contents :  The theoretical part of this course consists primarily in the linguistic description of the morphology and the syntax of Classical Latin. Every other year, verbal morphology and nominal morphology are alternatively studied. The description of the syntactic structures of Classical Latin (cases syntax, subordinate clauses syntax) is based on the study of grammatical models (memorization and active knowledge of those models are required) and on the reading of a text from the end of the republican period or of the beginning of the imperial period (Sallustus, Seneca...).

The practical part of this course is dedicated to exercises on the language (morphological and syntactic analysis exercises, translations, proses, various exercises in lexicography and syntax). The students prepare by themselves the reading, the translation and the grammatical commentary of the text mentioned above, but this homework is completed by exercises during the course.

New vocabulary lists have to be memorized. Scientific papers in the field of the synchronic or diachronic description of the Latin language have to be red, summarized and criticized.

Tests are distributed all over the year, to allow the student to assess his progress and the work still needed.
Course objective :  In the end of the course, the students must have acquired:

1. a perfect command of the lexicon and the Latin language structures in order to allow an easy reading of the Classical Latin prose-writers, the translation of Classical texts and the imitation or literary prose;

2. a perfect knowledge of the main morphological and syntactic phenomena;

3. the ability to apply to Latin the methods of a functional linguistic description.
Prerequisites :  Bac 1 "Latin language" and "Latin exercises I" courses
