Course contents :  Listening activities based on texts and articles dealing with sociology. Students will be required to participate actively in the course, which implies that attendance in class is essential.
Course objective :  The main objective of this course is to help students to improve their listening and note-taking skills. This will involve using a variety of recorded materials, including authentic interviews, recordings of classroom lectures, documentaries and other audio material. Students will demonstrate their understanding of the material through written exercises and discussions. So, the course will also offer students an opportunity to explain what they have understood to others.
Prerequisites :  The level of this course corresponds to the European levels B2/C1. Students will thus need to have a good basic knowledge of English and a thorough knowledge of the vocabulary and grammar studied in the first-, second- and third-year courses in the bachelor's degree.
Organization :  Weekly 2-hour class in a language laboratory from September to December 2010.
Written notes :  Any messages or documents relating to this course will be posted on "les nouvelles" or "les fichiers" on myUlg after the introductory class.
Assessment :  1. Continuous assessment : This will be based on: > students participation in class > a note-taking exercise >some of the listening comprehensions done in class.
2. Listening Comprehension exam :
Listening comprehension exercises based on at least one unheard script.
N.B. The marks obtained for work done during the year count for the second session if they are 10/20 or higher.
