| Course contents : | The course consists of a two-year personal preparation (Master 1 & 2). We recommend that students spend 1 hour/week on reading, listening to or speaking English. |
 |
| Course objective : | After completing the course, the learner is expected to give a clear, detailed and easily understandable scientific presentation. His/Her talk does not lead to any misunderstanding and no clarification is therefore needed.
The student will neither read a text, nor recite a text by heart. He/she can use a list of key words. The student uses a range of connectors (see BAC 2 & 3 courses) to link his/her ideas clearly. He/She has a good range of specialty vocabulary, which enables him/her to develop a scientific argument. The learner has a good grammatical control of all concepts seen in class in spite of a few non-systematic mistakes which he/she corrects in retrospect. The learner has acquired a clear pronunciation and intonation even if a foreign accent is sometimes evident. |

| Prerequisites : | Level B1+ of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (Council of Europe) |
 |
| Organization : | Computer-assisted self-learning:
A self-learning file is available for students on the language lab server. It includes videos, links to relevant websites, links to "Reflex English" and some tips for a more efficient self-learning.
Reflex English enables the student to assess his/her progress in English.
Conversation classes:
Each student is welcome to our weekly conversation classes. One session/week is organized specifically for Master students. Students are being given the opportunity to test their level of English and to train to give scientific presentations.
Teachers' avaialability:
Teachers are available for Master students on the basis of a previously communicated timetable in order to help students with their self-learning or with specific language difficulties. |
 |
| Assessment : | PID interview
The PID interview lasts 20 minutes in groups of 2 students (4-minute production each + 12-minute interaction). We assess the student's spoken production AND interaction skills. The student talks about the topic of the project, its relevance, the scientific context, some results or conclusions, etc.
Interview STAT1211-2 [ONLY for "Master en Statistiques"]
Considering that students in « Statistiques, orientation Biostatistique » have no PID, their first interview will be about the course STAT1211-2 « Approfondissement de techniques statistiques et informatiques (2ème partie) ». The 10-minute interview (4-minute production + 6-minute interaction) will be individual and will focus on general considerations (methodological, etc.). We assess the student's spoken production AND interaction skills.
TFE interview
The 15-minute interview (4-minute production + 11-minute interaction) will be individual. We assess the student's spoken production AND interaction skills.
