This 1st year course aims at improving students' general English language skills in order to be able to deal with the legal English course more efficiently. This course also serves as a good preparation for the 2nd year Juridical Terminology and Text Analysis course.

CEFRL levels of the course: listening (B1), reading (C1), speaking (B1), lecturing (B2), writing (B2)

This Dutch course is specially designed for first-year law students. Although the course is clearly oriented towards reading comprehension, it also aims at improving the student's command of legal Dutch in speaking, writing and listening.

Course objective :

The objectives of this course are to help students read and understand the texts studied in the legal English course. To achieve these objectives, students will have to revise and/or develop their grammar and vocabulary, as well as other practical language skills.

The main aims of this course are

  • to improve the students' ability to read and understand general texts and articles about legal issues,
  • to strengthen their speaking skills through discussions and debates on the issues studied in class,
  • to exercise their writing skills as students will be expected to write comments, summaries, general conclusions, ...
  • to improve their listening comprehension as the class is taught in Dutch from the start.

Prerequisites :

This class is taught in Dutch from the start and is meant for students with a prerequisite B1 level of Dutch as described in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

The class is taught in Dutch from the start and the different texts and articles studied in class are not meant for beginners.

This 60-hour course is taught all year round, 1 hour a week, on top of the two-hour Legal English class.
A placement test will be organized on September 21st to determine who can be exempted from the General English class.

This 60-hour course is taught all year round, 2 hours a week.

Students will make sure to prepare the texts and exercises on a weekly basis at home as indicated by the teacher .

Students will buy the syllabus entitled "Nederlands voor rechtenstudenten 2009-2010" from Intercopy.

Assessment :

Regular tests will be organised to assess students' progress . These tests will have no influence on the final mark . 3 tests have been scheduled (on November 17th, February 14th and april 4th).

the final exam will be made up of a written (14/20) and an oral (6/20)part.
Students' writing skills will be assessed during a two-hour written exam. The exam will include a sight text as well as questions about the language and vocabulary of the texts and articles seen in class. In addition, students will have to read and prepare a number of articles at home before the exam.
The oral part will assess not only the students' listening compréhension and speaking, but also their use of the vocabulary exercised in class, and will bear on the topics discussed during the course.
Moreover, students will present a text at least 1,5 pages long about a legal issue selected from a source of their choice. They will be required to hand in a copy of their text to their teacher during the week of April 19th.
