"Medieval manuscript illumination in the West".

Between the 8th until the 16th centuries, the art of manuscript illumination went through remarkable developments. During this seminar, we will have a closer look at libraries (Library of Stavelot, Library of the Dukes of Burgundy...), at given scriptoria (Tours during the Carolingian period, Reichenau during the Ottonian period, Jean Pucelle's atelier...) as well as at particular works which we will in a way dissect (Book of Kells, Psalter of Utrecht, Bible of Souvigny, Psalter of Saint Louis, Book of Hours of Rohan...). Visits of libraries that are rich in medieval manuscripts will be organised.
Course objective :  Learn how to make a research on a given manuscript or on a set of manuscripts and how to write a scientific report, both precise and concise about a medieval topic; also, how to raise interest within a knowledgeable audience.
Workshops :  Write a 3-page scientific report.
