Course contents :  Social enterprises address social and environmental challenges which are relevant to society. So do public authorities and to a certain extent also businesses, though with different goals and strategies. Hence, in several fields, social enterprises coexist with other types of actors. This course examines the ability of each of these actors to generate social innovation, i.e. to conceive and implement new solutions to social and environmental issues. To understand the logics of each actor, an institutional framework is used, combining economic, sociological and managerial perspectives. A special attention is devoted to the relationships among the different actors, from competition to collaboration.

Course objective :  
  • Identify the dynamics of and opportunities for social innovation in a historical perspective
  • Master theoretical frameworks allowing for an in-depth analysis of the diversity of socially innovative organizations
  • Learn to seize and interpret the interactions among social enterprises, corporations and public agencies in various fields
Prerequisites :  A course on organization theory (economic or sociological perspective according to the type of degree)
Organization :  First, a number of theoretical presentations introduce the dynamics of social innovation and the major insights on organizational diversity. Then, three fields are examined through interactive discussions (to be chosen among: health, culture, development cooperation, ethical finance, etc.). Students are expected to prepare each class with readings.
Written notes :  The virtual platform Lol@ will be used to post:
- The Powerpoint presentations used during the classes
- A number of readings to be read before each class.
Assessment :  The evaluation will be based on:
- The involvement of each one during the classes
- An oral exam based on both the appropriation of theory and its application to a particular field (to be chosen individually)
