Course contents :  This course is about social entrepreneurship and management of social enterprises. Social enterprises are private organisations pursuing social aims : nonprofit organisations, co-operatives, NGOs, mutuals, foundations. Those organisations are active in social services, culture and arts, health, local development, fair trade, alternative finance.

The course is structured in two parts. The fist part describes the social economy and analyses its "raisons d'être". The second part has a more practical character. It presents the various components of a social business plan (marketing, financing, HR management, governance).
Course objective :  The course seeks

  • to present a new way to think about social challenges faced by our society,
  • to improve the knowledge of the social economy and
  • to highlight the specificity of management in social enterprises.
Workshops :  The practical work is integrated in the lecture sessions.
Organization :  The course will take place in november and december 2010. Contact the professor for the timetables.
Written notes :
  • Scientific readings (in English and French) are recommended for the theoretical part. Bibliographical references will be given during the first class.
  • A Social Business Plan Model will also be given for the second part of the course.
Assessment :  The students will be evaluated on the basis of an examination and on their social business plan. It consists in a 20 pages project, written by two students and presented during the examination period.
