| Course contents : | I. Biosafety of GMOs 1. Principles for the assessment and management of the risks of Biotechnologies. 2. Role playing : a notifyer company (group of students) submits an application which is assessed by panels of experts (other students groups).
II. Ethics of Agrobiotechnology 1. Ethics of biotechnology : a multidisciplinar approach emphasizing values and value conflicts 2. Options for the action : role of ethics and ethical tools 3. Case studies (individual works) |

| Course objective : | Introduce the regulatory and ethical norms applying to agricultural and food biotechnologies. Role playing : a notifyer company (group of students) submits an application which is assessed by panels of experts (other students groups). Raise awareness on the ethical relevance of GMOs and introduce the main ethical analysis tools of these issues. Describe an open conflict about GMOs, identifying the interests and the values at stake. After completing the course the student is expected to Be aware of the main issues regarding the biosafety and ethics of GMOs applied to agriculture and food. Understand the legal and regulatory provisions aiming at evaluating and managing the risks associated with GMOs. Understand ethical analysis as a multidisplinar view on an action and its effects, highlighting the underlying values, the conflics between them and how the conflicts can be solved. |
