| Course contents : | The course provides a systematic presentation of the various vehicles and components of teaching French as a foreign and second language:
- the subject matter of this course (language, communication, culture, etc.),
- its players (the learners, the teacher, etc.),
- its methods (grammar/translation, structural/behaviourist, communicative, etc.)
- its objectives and its goals (and their evaluation, etc.)
- its circumstances (place, institution, conditions in which it takes place), etc.
The course introduces both the principles of foreign language learning, in particular French, and practical in-class teaching methods (verbal interactions, notional and functional approaches, per project; lesson planning and organization; etc.) |

| Course objective : | Analyze critically with the participants theories and methods of teaching French as a foreign and second language as well as the conditions in which the language is taught.
Train the participants on the principles and practice of language classroom management to prepare or improve them for the profession of teaching French as a foreign or second language in its rich variety. |

| Prerequisites : | Some knowledge and/or experience in linguistics and/or teaching. |

| Organization : | First semester, Tuesdays from 1:30 to 5:30 pm, room to be announced. |

| Written notes : | DEFAYS, Jean-Marc, Le Français langue étrangère et seconde: enseignement et apprentissage, Sprimont, Mardaga, 2003, "Psychologie et sciences humaines". Use will also be made of audiovisual and multimedia material according to the themes taken up and the needs. |

| Assessment : | Written and/or oral exam. Evaluation of the in-school training (and possibly an individual project, depending on the participants' projects). Session : January |

| Remarks : | Throughout the presentation of the theory, the students are expected to participate actively in the discussions provoked and the practical exercises and case studies that are put to them.
An alternative programme may be suggested to students who are unable to attend the course. |
