Course contents :  - History and scope of microbiology
- Study of microbial structure: microscopy and specimen preparation
- Procaryotic cell structure and functions
- Eucaryotic cell structure and functions
- Microbial nutrition, growth and control
- Microbial metabolisms, the generation of energy
- Microbial genetics: general principles, recombination, transposans and plasmids, transformation
- Diversity of the microbial world; principles of microbial taxonomy
- Antimicrobial chemotherapy (overview)
- Viruses: general characteristics, bacteriophages and viruses of eucaryotes (first principles)
- Microorganisms as components of the environment (overview)
- Food and industrial microbiology (overview)
- Microbial biohazards and biosafety in laboratory and the environnement
- Practical works to isolate and characterize microorganisms from different samples
Course objective :  This course provides a balanced introduction to all major areas of Microbiology. Foundations are presented emphasizing on basic biochemistry, structure/function, biology and methodology. Principal attention is devoted to present micro-organisms as important biological models and for their importance and utilization in environment, agronomy and agroindustry.
After completing the course the student is expected to
- understand procaryotic cell mechanisms
- understand the great diversity of procaryotic world
- use the elementary practices of microorganisms culture
