As an figurehead of international architecture, Rem Koolhaas is a model and a source of inspiration for an entire generation of architects. Koolhaas not only redefined the limits and the premises of architectural and town planning disciplines, but also repositioned architectural discussions at the forefront of the political, social and cultural agendas, thus reconnecting it with the architect's historical ambitions as an homo universalis (man of the world).
Within the framework of this applied research course, critical reading will be made of the architectural and theoretical premises which support the strategic vision and operational logic of the OMA/AMO partnership. This is a double analysis in the sense that it relates not only to the means and the tools of spatial, architectural and town planning production, but also to the means and tools of producing discursive and theoretical logic.
To achieve this, a critical reading will be made of Koolhaas and OMA's publications, focussing on the discursive structure of theoretical production (historical, referential framework, main themes and concepts, logical structure etc.) At the same time, an analysis of architectural and town planning production will be conducted, focussing on the different formal and spatial tools of production (elements, relations, processes and strategies). Analysis of architectural/town planning production will be conducted using reference projects and through models and visual diagrams. |
 |
| Course objective : | This applied research course aims to stimulated analytical and critical understanding of architectural and theoretical production of Rem Koolhaas's school (OMA/AMO). The course aims to conduct a critical, vertical and multi-disciplinary reading of architecture, questioning the different facets at work in the OMA/AMO school of through (notably spatial, architectural, town planning, theoretical, semiotic and constructive logic etc). In addition, the aim will be to position a work within an historical, contemporary or future referential framework (for example, historical references, impact on the "OMA generation" etc.). Generally speaking, the aim is to analyse the processes and strategies at work in architectural and theoretical production (elements, processes and strategies). |
 |
| Prerequisites : | Good linguistic foundations of English required. |
 |
| Organization : | The course methodology is based on a dual approach (theoretical and practical analysis). The theoretical analysis is based on a critical reading of publications from/by OMA as well as publications from R. Gargiani on Rem Koolhaas/OMA (see above) which will serve as reference works. Practical analysis will be through the production of models and visual documents. |
 |
| Written notes : | Reference works: Roberto Gargiani, Rem Koolhaas. The Construction of Merveilles, Lausanne: EPFL Press, Routledge, 2008.
The main publications from OMA: Content; S,M,L,XL; Delirious New York.
Publications about OMA: magazines (El Croquis, A&U, Volume etc.) (see bibliographic list) |
 |
| Assessment : | Assessment will be through:
- Powerpoint presentations (in small groups);
- drafting a critical essay (individual);
- drafting a group document, as a conclusion (collective compendium);
- production of visual documents (physical and virtual models, diagrams, outlines and axonometry, conceptual tables, plans/sections).
