| Course contents : | Ancient, traditional and contemporary Belgian architecture
- Study of the Belgian architectural environment from an historical perspective. Definition of styles and how these are expressed in different regional urban and rural environments, supported with ancient cartography and plans of the area, the evolution of groups and modes of installation. A few contemporary examples are also presented, outlining questions of renovation, integration into sites etc.
- Introduction to traditional construction procedures.
- Introduction to regulations relating to "ancient centres" and the rural environment (CWATUP)
- The course may be completed with site visits. Individual visits remain advisable.

| Course objective : |
- Beyond the study of towns, villages, groups or buildings which serve as examples and reference material, to learn to analyse the context and the environment within which future architects will be working.
- To acquire a sufficiently precise vocabulary to analyse, identify and describe ancient architecture.

| Prerequisites : | Course in history and philosophy of art in earlier years. |

| Organization : | The theory course, based on the presentation of numerous slides (around 900 slides) is initially visual. It will be completed by reading documents taken from the syllabus and possibly by visits which, in any case, can be conducted individually ... |

| Written notes : | The syllabus is made up of documentation illustrating the course through drawings, introductory, legal or historical texts and a list of publications which are easily accessible in the Institute's library or in the Groupe d'Ateliers de Recherche (GAR). |

| Assessment : | A written exam based on a questionnaire (questions on synthesis and knowledge of the subject), on the stylistic analysis of buildings presented in the slides and on mastery of the vocabulary used in the Inventaires du Patrimoine, of which students should have sufficient passive knowledge to replicate, through drawing, the building described.
A complementary oral exam may be proposed for foreign students.
Participation in class will form part of the assessment. |
