Course objective :  Progressively, students will familiarise themselves with the successive attitudes which societies and architects have had towards ancient buildings. They will accumulate reading material which is generally very new to them, and which will guide them in the restoration workshop, where the problems faced are very different to those of a project. This will gradually allow them to develop their own philosophy towards restoration.
Prerequisites :  The general knowledge which students have at the end of the Baccalaureat and a strong interest in the historical dimension of architectural heritage.
Organization :  Seminars, slideshows, visits.
Written notes :  La conservation et la restauration des monuments et des bâtiments historiques, Paris, Unesco, 1973.
Lagarde, Pierre. La mémoire des pierres, Paris, Albin Michel, 1979.
The Icomos publications ... and others upon request.
Assessment :  Critical presentation of a classified building somewhere in Europe, with the help of iconographic documents. This building is one which has been restored, is currently being restored or whose restoration is the aim of the project.
An oral presentation before the entire class, lasting at least 10 minutes; a few additional minutes will be set aside for questions and answers.
Students will leave a document on CD Rom so that each student can keep a record of communications.
