ARSL0509-1  Final thesis
Duration :
Credits/ECTS :
Master en architecture (Saint Luc), 2nd yearFirst semester12
Holder(s) :  David Tieleman
Language :  French language
Course contents :  The thesis consists of a final piece of individual work which should demonstrate the student's ability to define and treat a subject. The choice of subject is left to the student's discretion. The student must also choose a supervisor from among the Institute's teaching staff.
The subject field must relate to architecture in its broadest sense, i.e. anything which touches upon the design and development of the lived in space.
This piece of work is not intended to be a piece of pure research: it does not aim at opening new theoretical avenues and must not tackle a previously unexplored subject. However, it should demonstrate the ability for critical analysis and must shed personal light upon the subject in question.
The thesis usually consists of around 100 pages; it must be perfectly legible and demonstrate stylistic coherence; it is also an exercise in coherent communication, both graphically, orally and in written form.
The finished thesis should be submitted (January) for presentation in the first session.
Course objective :  This piece of work, which for many is at the end of higher education and university education, should demonstrate the student's ability to define and study a subject. It occurs within a legal framework which states that it must consist of at least 30 pages (of 1,500 characters). However, often a longer piece of work is required. In architecture, a thesis generally consists of between sixty and a hundred pages.
This piece of work is not intended to be a piece of pure research: it does not aim at opening new theoretical avenues and must not tackle a previously unexplored subject. However, it must demonstrate the student's analytical skills. Originality - which is not a determining factor - can be found by comparing documents which at first sight do not appear to be similar. The thesis must be perfectly legible and demonstrate stylistic cohesion (when drafting students should consult the document "Petit aide-mémoire" by Xavier Folville - October 1993 - in order to solve any problems of references and annotations such as bibliographies, sources, notes and quotations).
Organization :  The thesis supervisor intervenes primarily at the start of the research (suggesting reading, research or resource people, contributing to the framework of the thesis ...) and contributes towards its assessment (organisation of juries).
Teaching staff will be involved in specific seminars; for example : research methodology, written and verbal communication ... ;
Each thesis is individually monitored by the supervisor.
Students are encouraged to seek joint-supervision of theses by co-supervisors outside the Institut Supérieur d'Architecture, to be chosen depending on the particularities of their approach.
Assessment :  Assessment methods will vary depending on the type of research developed (thesis-project, jointly-supervised thesis with external partners ...).
