| Course contents : | Introduction to design and to contemporary furniture
The course will summarise the main objects produced by the major leaders (publishers and designers) of contemporary furniture. The course content is updated each year: the development of new models, the confirmation of certain trends ...
The cultural and historical context is also sketched out from the start of the industrialisation of furniture (Thonet) through the Art Nouveau movement, Bauhaus etc, to the present day. |
 |
| Course objective : | To discover contemporary furniture as a cultural expression of our society and its role as a privileged mediator between mankind and our living space.
To encourage students to visit shops and showrooms in order to facilitate contact, experimentation, manipulation, and criticism... rather than learning through books.
To encourage documentary research, particularly through the Internet, and the use of digital materials. |
 |
| Prerequisites : | Knowledge of contemporary architecture and the main cultural movements of this century.
Erasmus: sufficient knowledge of French to participate in group work. |
 |
| Organization : | Student presentations will be prepared with the teacher who will provide part of the documentation. The presentations will cover a given subject: a publisher, a designer or a specific area of domestic equipment. Numerous interventions from the teacher will complement the commentaries made by students.
The course is completed with introductory lessons and analysis given by the teacher. |
 |
| Written notes : | All works on contemporary furniture and design as well as documentation from firms and Internet sites.
Illustrated papers will be prepared by the students during the course and will cover the basic information on the objects presented. |
 |
| Assessment : |
- Assessment of the quality of oral and written work carried out in groups (documentary research in the library and in situ information, critical reflection, presentation of objects, commentaries ...). Participation in class.
- Written exam: responses to a questionnaire showing to what extent the student has met the requirements, followed by identification and analysis of objects presented in the form of slides.
Students who are taking part in a mobility programme will take part in the group work and may be given an oral exam in addition to the written exam. |
