ARSL0310-1  Structures stability and design 1
Duration :  52h Th
Credits/ECTS :
Bachelier en architecture (St Luc), 2nd yearToute l'année4
Holder(s) :  Jean‑Marie Bleus
Language :  French language
Course contents :  Theory classes alternate with sessions on completed exercises; these exercises provide the opportunity to highlight how the resistance of materials seen in the first cycle is applied to construction.
Proportions of:
  • Beams, columns, A-frames, wooden or steel queen posts
  • Beams, posts, reinforced concrete slabs
  • Foundations, shear walls, masonry work, supporting walls
This theoretical approach is complemented with numerous exercises completed in class, the structural analysis of existing buildings with interesting architecture, and the creation of models aiming to combine functionality and aesthetics.
Course objective :  To allow architecture students to understand the background and scale of structural architectural elements which they create and/or analyse. In the first year of the 2nd cycle, the aim is limited to simple load configurations and geometry.
3rd year students must be able to work in a group to create a model, check orders in terms of the scale and proportions of a 1st or 2nd year project and gauge the significant for the architectural part of the project.
Prerequisites :  Course in Graphostatic Mechanics 1 and 2.
Course in the Resistance of Materials.
Organization :  Theoretical approaches through practical exercises about small structures encountered in well-known projects or in students' projects.
Individual exercises by students using some of their own architectural projects.
Written notes :  Introduction à l'Analyse des structures (Marc André Studer and François Frey).
Forms and documentation.
Assessment :  At the end of the year, a written theory exam (multiple choice) and exercises.
