Credits/ECTS :
Bachelier en architecture (St Luc), 2nd yearSecond semester2
Holder(s) :  Patrick Bribosia, Mariette Dorthu
Language :  French language
Course contents :  1st Phase:
Lectures on the different ways of representing space which humans have used through the history of art, as applied to architecture.
Perception of their world depended upon the contexts within which these people lived and through these representations, they express the respective ideas which they had of their worlds.
In the 2nd Phase of the course, students will consciously choose the iconography with which they wish to experiment: namely a choice between:
Either A)
  • Anamorphosis.
  • Vision in relief (binocular view).
  • Variations on the board (dihedral, trihedral, polyhedral, cylindrical, spherical, etc).
  • Inverse perspectives.
  • Etc.
Or B)
  • Sketches through drawing from sight and freehand, in order to understand and master the proportions of the human body.
Course objective :
  • The course is a chance to briefly consider the historical presentation of the theory of perspective as set out during the descriptive course in the first two years of the Baccalaureat and to further extend this through experimentation.
  • Through practical learning, the course strengthens the view of space and how to capture a person's posture increasingly rapidly - the initial time proposed; 20 minutes down to 5 minutes. -
Organization :  A theoretical presentation And practical exercises; during the sessions, students will draw for around two hours every two weeks. Instructions will be given either on how to apply the theory through in depth research or by drawing what we see.
Written notes :  Frank CHING, Design Drawing, Van Nostrand Reinhold, New York, USA, 1979.
Philippe COMAR, La perspective en jeu, Découverte Gallimard Arts, Paris, 1992.
Erwin PANOFSKY, La perspective comme symbolique, Ed. De Minuit, 1978.
Assessment :  The assessment is summative. Following the exercise the teachers will calculate the sum of the results obtained using the following weighting:
  • Involvement in the course and interest in the research: 5/20
  • Result of the exercises: 15/20
The grade relates to both the quality of the final product and interest in the approach.
