Course contents :  Students are split into two groups depending on their ability, based on a test carried out at the start of the year.
For students with a lower level, the content is as follows :
  • Passive revision of the main grammatical structures: present, past and future tense, modal auxiliaries, passive voice, word order in a sentence, superlatives and comparatives, countables and uncountables, prepositions, pronouns, adjectives, conjunctions etc.
  • Decomposition of compound terms ("compound") and recognition of prefixes and suffixes regularly encountered in English.
  • Analysis of technical texts from Architecture and Building Construction (James Cunning - Addison Wesley Longman) & A Pattern Language (Christopher Alexander - Oxford University Press).
  • Analysis of general texts on architecture (general article on English or American architects or buildings, extracts from various magazines and websites).
For students with an intermediate level, the content is as follows :
  • Analysis of technical texts from Architecture and Building Construction (James Cunning - Addison Wesley Longman) & A Pattern Language (Christopher Alexander - Oxford University Press).
  • Analysis of general texts on architecture (general article on English or American architects or buildings, extracts from various magazines and websites).
  • Oral presentations of student's own projects carried out in workshops throughout the year.
Course objective :  For lower level students, the course objective is to have a passive understanding of the language allowing them to understand the general meaning as well as 80% of detailed points in technical and general texts related to architecture, without the help of a dictionary.
For intermediate level students, the aim of the course is to acquire an active oral ability in the language, enabling them to make a 15 minute presentation on an architecture project developed during the year.
Prerequisites :  
  • basic vocabulary of around 500 words
  • knowledge of basic grammatical structures
Organization :  
  • Because the aim for lower level students is largely to improve their reading ability, teaching will take place through reading general texts, architectural documents and grammatical exercises enabling them to understand the passive structure of the language. Teaching will use practical exercises and additional work will be required out of class. This work will take the form of exercises aiming mainly to strengthen passive general vocabulary and vocabulary relating specifically to architecture.
  • Because the aim for intermediate level students is to improve oral ability during technical presentations, teaching will involve public speaking and preparation of presentations on the life of famous architects, their creations and students' own projects.Teaching will focus on practical exercises and additional work will be required out of class.This work will take the form of exercises aiming mainly to strengthen passive active vocabulary and vocabulary relating specifically to architecture.

Assessment :  For lower level students the exam will consist of :
  • Demonstrating passive knowledge of 500 common technical terms.
  • Orally translating into French extracts of general and technical texts without the help of a dictionary.
For intermediate level students the exam will consist of :
  • Demonstrating active knowledge of 500 common technical terms.
  • Making a 15 minute oral presentation in English on their end of year workshop project.
