Course and exercises

This course is the second part of the specialized didactics course in chemistry. The following aspects are developed and require the active participation of the students.

- Good teaching practices involving a competence-based approach

- Assessment of competences

- Development of an experiment-based teaching approach: 5th and 6th year's curriculum

- Efficient use of computer tools in a chemistry classroom

- Introduction to epistemological reflexion: understanding the characteristics of the scientific method, the relationships with other disciplines, promoting ethical aspects

Teaching practicums

The students are in charge of two practicums during which they teach in secondary school classes under the supervision of experienced teachers. In addition to chemistry, they also teach a limited number of biology lessons.

Reflexive practice

Reflexive practices are based on the analysis, by the students and the members of the chemistry didactics group, of the practicum report, in order to define the appropriate feedback.

Extra-scholar teaching activities

Participation in a few scholar activities taking place outside the traditional classroom environment: accompanying pupils to scientific events, meeting the parents, ...

Course objective :
Course and exercises

At the end of their AESS studies, the future teachers will be able to:

- develop among their students a citizenship-oriented behaviour;

- contribute to the intellectual development of each student;

- guide the learning processes;

- promote the development of transferable skills;

- assess the results of their teaching practices;

- work in a team-oriented way;

- use efficiently modern communication techniques;

- follow the legal regulations involving safety and health in a chemical environment.

Teaching practicums

At the end of their practicums, the future teachers are expected to master the major competences that define a professional teacher so that they can participate efficiently in a secondary school teaching team.

Reflexive practice

Reflexive practices are one of the many tools which should help the future teachers to:

- develop among their students a citizenship-oriented behaviour;

- contribute to the intellectual development of each student;

- guide the learning processes;

- promote the development of transferable skills;

- assess the results of her/his teaching practice;

- work in a team-oriented way;

- use efficiently modern communication techniques;

- follow the legal regulations involving safety and health in a chemical environment.

Extra-scholar teaching activities

Make future teachers sensitive to the very diverse facets of their job.

Prerequisites :
Course and exercises

- Course AESS0216

- A good knowledge of chemistry at the bachelor level

- A good knowledge of the general didactics course

Teaching practicums

Part I of the chemistry didactics course and the associated practicum (AESS0216)

Workshops :
Course and exercises

Practical work is integrated into the theoretical course (development of an experiment-based teaching, assessment techniques ...)
Organization :
Course and exercises

This course follows course AESS0216. It also consists in seminars developing the various aspects described above. They take place on Wednesday afternoon, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m, during the whole second quadrimester. The students are informed about the programme and the timetable at the beginning of the academic year.

Teaching practicums

The practicums will take place during the second quadrimester 2010-2011.
The students are in charge of finding themselves the secondary school and their supervisor(s).
The students receive detailed written information about the organizational aspects.
8 hours must be taught in technical qualification classes or in professional classes.
Reflexive practices are organized at the end of the practicum and when a member of the chemistry didactics laboratory comes to assess a lesson.

Reflexive practice

Reflexive practices are organized at the end of each practicum and when the members of the chemistry didactics group come to assess a lesson in a school.

Written notes :
Course and exercises

The students are provided with various printed documents concerning the different topics taught.
Assessment :
Course and exercises

The students have to present a written and oral report on a team-work dealing with a chemistry-oriented didactical theme, to be chosen during the academic year. Competences in epistemology will also be assessed. In addition, a public chemistry lesson will be given by each student during the examination period. The global assessment will take the quality of these various works into account. A reasonable knowledge of the chemistry concepts involved in all these works is a necessary condition to obtain a global grading level equal to at least 10/20.

Teaching practicums

The quality of the practicum is assessed both by the supervisor and by the members of the chemistry didactics group.

A report must be written by the student at the end of each practicum and will be assessed.

Reflexive practice

The practicum report must include a critical analysis of the work performed.
