HULG3025-1  Introduction to scientific work
Duration :  30h Th
Credits/ECTS :
Bachelor in translation and interpretation, 2nd yearToute l'année2
Holder(s) :  Cynthia Chiarlitti
Language :  Langue française
Course contents :  The first half of the course will be devoted to the discovery of different theoretical concepts, generally accompanied by short exercises. The other half of the course will consist of presentations given by the students in small groups. These presentations will consist of analytical exercises (scientific articles on sustainable development, genetics, etc.) and will use the tools seen during class. The subjects addressed will enable students to familiarise themselves with concepts relating to exact sciences.

The following subjects will be covered:
- Defining a scientific piece of work
- Creating a dissertation: why and how?
- Presenting a scientific piece of work
- Building a bibliography and presenting it
- Evaluating bibliographical sources
- Evaluating an internet site
- Building an index and glossary
- Establishing the research problem and hypotheses
- Establishing data-collection methods
- Copyright and intellectual property (plagiarism, etc.)
- Presenting quotes, references and notes
- Differentiating a theoretical text from other texts
- Rewording, generalising and defining concepts
- Carrying out library research
Course objective :  Introducing students to three levels of scientific approaches :
- in their bibliographical research ;
- in drafting their work ;
- in analysing documents which they have been given.

This involves both discovering what a piece of scientific work is, but also to learn how to create a piece of scientific work, respecting certain rules (bibliographical reference, citations, etc.)
Organization :  Theory and exercise sheets will be distributed to students. However, these will not constitute a syllabus. Note-taking is, therefore, recommended.
Written notes :  Main bibliography

- G. Cislaru, C. Claudel and M. Vlad, L'écrit universitaire en pratique, De Boeck, Brussels, 2009

- J-P. Fragnière, Comment réussir un mémoire, 4th edition, Dunod, Paris, 2009

- P. Pescatore, Initiation à la méthode scientifique, 2nd edition, University of Luxembourg, 2008

- C. Schnedecker, Lire, comprendre, rédiger des textes théoriques, De Boeck, Brussels, 2002
Assessment :  There are two parts to the course assessment: a presentation incorporating an analytical exercise (1/2) and an oral exam (1/2) covering the theoretical concepts covered in class.
