Course contents :  In 2009-2010, the courses Approaches and methods applied to the history of religions and Philosophy of religion and secularism will be organized jointly and their description will therefore be common. The main topic will be the history of the relationship between religion and rationality. It will focus on the most famous transitions during this history, from the antiquity to the present. Some questions will be more precisely addressed: the treatment of 'superstition' over the centuries, the relationship between the theological and the political spheres, the conditions of feasibility of a science of religions, etc. The approach will be both philosophical and historical. External lecturers will be invited to talk on specific aspects of the course.
Course objective :  This course aims at discerning, firstly, the different stages of the critical approach to religion and how it is made into an object of science, and, secondly, the breaking points for understanding the current discussions on the relationship between religion and secularism.
