Course contents :  The class proposes a critical introduction to the concept of 'culture' as elaborated by the social sciences. Lessons will focus on a particular aspect of French or Belgian culture and will question a) the definition of culture on which it is grounded; b) the legitimacy of its status; c) what is at stake when school transmit it; d) parts of the knowledge which are often transmitted by school.
Course objective :  The class aims at developing students and future teachers' critical points of view in their choices about the definition of culture on which they will found their teaching, and also giving them parts of the necessary knowledge to feed these choices.
Prerequisites :  None
Workshops :  None
Organization :  Ex-cathedra class, but open to discussions between students and teachers.
Written notes :  A bibliography will be given to the students at the beginning of the class.
Assessment :  Oral examination to weigh up the understanding of the concepts covered in class and to encourage critical thinking.
