| Course contents : | Practical exercises are organized during 2 weeks.
One week is organized with two submodules, one on cattle breeding and the second on pig breeding.
During the second week, exercises are devolved to genetics. The goals of the genetics paraclinicals in farms management are to illustrate the selection such as it is practiced in the field, against genetic diseases and defaults affecting most animals, as well as to inform the student on the tools implemented to realize such selection (phenotypic, genotypic and assisted by markers). The progresses realized in genetics during the last decades allowed the setting up of a big selection dynamics in many species and the vulgarisation of these new concepts is more than necessary to use those tools it with good advice. Eventually, a external collaborator will explain their involvement in farm survey and in the daily management of veterinary practice. |
 |
| Course objective : | The objectives of the activities organized during the first week (12.5 h) are :
-familiarise the students to survey dairy and beef farms. Animal productions systems similar to systems of commercial farms will be studied. The survey follows a life cycle of the animals.
-offer to the students an approach in pig production from birth to slaughter. - give a global approach of the factors involved in the profitability of pig farms with specific objectives.
At the end of the practice works of the second week (12.5 h), students will be able to understand a selection program, to criticize what is actually done and to propose improvements to the systems already set up. Moreover, they will be able to advise the owners and the breeders in the choice of the breeding animals and in setting up preferential mating within a breed. At last, the eradication aspects or limitation of the frequency of hereditary defaults within a population will have to be mastered. To prove they comprehend the principles, the students are required to do a presentation of 15 minutes on a subject at the end of the practicals. |
 |
| Prerequisites : | Good knowledge related to animal productions |
 |
| Organization : | In the submodule on cattle breeding, the activities are carried on every morning at the experimental station. Since these activities are variable according to the season and to the physiological status of the animals, the students are on duties during the night and the week-ends according to a time table previously fixed. The presence is compulsory. When a student is unable to be present, he will be repleaced by a colleague. |
 |
| Assessment : | During the first week, the students will be evaluated on their daily motivations and their knowledge on animal production.
During the second week, evaluation will be done on the daily activities and on the presentation of a subject. |
