Course contents :  The students will be able to:

  • estimate the age of horses and cattle, using morphological and particularly dental characteristics;
  • complete the identification of a horse;
  • assess the main skills and defects of an animal according to its use by man.
Course objective :  This course directs the attention to the variations that exist between animals of the same breed. A method is proposed of comparing each animal individual with the true type for its breed. Usual identification methods of horses and cattle are described.

To apply the theoretical concepts acquired
Prerequisites :  anatomy knowledges

Knowledge of the following subjects:

  • "Appreciation of domestic animals"
  • "Ethnography"
Workshops :  Only with small groups af students

Written notes :  Multimedia on webCT
Assessment :  The students need to know to estimate the age of horses and cattle, to complete the identification of a horse using official standards, and to locate eventual morphological defects on an animal.



A test will be organized during the practicals and will be take into account for 1/4 of the final note
