| Course contents : | This course deals with the problems encountered by researchers in psychology, pedagogy and speech therapy. Through the use of a statistical software, the course analyses and describes the traditional statistical procedures to solve those problems. Although a theoretical account synthesizes the various statistical concepts under consideration in each chapter, the course has a pragmatically character and is directed towards concrete applications. The topics taken into consideration are as follows: General information on the data processing software - the STATISTICA Software - Data and Variables - Creation of data files - Processing the data - Elementary Statistics and Charts - Correlation and Covariance - Comparison of two Means - Tables of Contingency and Independence - Comparative Tests (means, correlations, proportions) - Linear Regression - One-way Analysis of Variance - Two-ways Analysis of Variance (factorial and nested designs) - Analysis of Covariance - Repeated Measure Designs - Nonparametric Statistics. |
| Course objective : | First of all, the course is intended to make the students able to solve statistical problems and to use a computer by themselves. For this purpose, the students must acquire and/or develop three kinds of knowledge : statistics, data processing and the use of a specialized statistical software (STATISTICA). In addition to theoretical knowledge, the students must also become able to master the handling of a tool and to use it correctly in various concrete situations. |
| Prerequisites : | Having passed the exam after the previous year's course of statistics. |
| Workshops : | 30 hours of practice are proposed to the students. In addition to the exercises carried out during these sessions, complementary exercises (with solutions) make the course even more clear and are proposed to the students in a specific book.
The corresponding data files are put at the disposal of all the students on the web site "http:/my.ulg.be" of Liege University. |
| Organization : | The first class is given "ex cathedra" in front of the audience. From the second class, the course takes place in the computer room (CAFEIM). Besides, the students are divided into three (or four) groups, which gives each of them, basing his work on concrete problems, the possibility to work on a computer individually. And this in order to help them to master the use of a computer and the statistical software in CAFEIM as well. |

| Assessment : | The evaluation test lasts three hours. Each student has to solve several concrete statistical problems on a computer and by himself. For this test, each student has his books and personal notes at his disposal. The answers to the questions of the test must be written down on the personalized questionnaire that each student received at the beginning. |
