Course contents :  First part
Presentation of North-South relationships in their historical context: colonial operations and birth of the concept of development: Congo, Algeria, Rwanda (5 hours)
Second part
Presentation of the concepts of development, under-development and 'aid through development' using the main theories of development and the principal political and institutional contexts.
In conclusion, the following questions will be tackled: the end of the Third-World, development failure, changes to contemporary theories (15 hours).
Third part
Socio-anthropology of contemporary operations in developing countries through the international politics of aid and co-operation and the operations of aid institutions and partnerships. Case studies and examples principally taken from African experiences.
- One module will be devoted to the health sector (B. Schoonbroodt, E. Paul).
- One module will be devoted to the education sector (G. Stangherlin, G. Comhaire).
- One module will be devoted to the operations of "civic society" organisations, in politics and development and co-operation programmes (G. Pirotte and Kimwanga Pelerin).
These modules will be constructed from research from two Groupes de recherche en appui à la politique fédérale de coopération (GRAP) and presentations from researchers who are actively involved in the GRAP.
Course objective :  Knowledge of the evolution of the main theories of development and co-operation and relationships between North and South.
Ability to carry out historical, comparative and critical analyses of speeches, ideologies and methods of aid organisations and development programmes.
Ability to practically analyse contemporary operations in developing countries and integration of socio-anthropological knowledge into collective and interdisciplinary issues.

Organization :  First semester course.
Direct teaching: lectures, presentations by researchers, seminar work.
Written notes :  First and second parts
A reading portfolio will be distributed at the start of the course.
Third part
Jean-Pierre Olivier de Sardan, Anthropologie et développement. Editions Karthala, Paris, 2003.
Portfolios of additional reading relating to the modules will be distributed at the start of the second part of the course.
Assessment :  - 1st session: individual written examination, essay-style questions and case study analysis (of a development project)
- 2nd session: Individual oral examination
