Course contents :  The aim of the course is to introduce the students to a sociological reflection on the contemporary family.
Organization :  The first part of the course consists in a presentation, in the form of a magisterial instruction, of different sociological theories of the family, namely the evolutionary, functionalist, interactionist, utilitarian, structuralist and pragmatic theories. The presentation will be illustrated by the reading of several texts that represent the different paradigms studied. At the end of this first part, students should be able to identify the main lines of the sociology of the family, to establish relationships between various theoretical principles, and to reconstruct or deconstruct the thought of an author.

The second part of the course concentrates on a few typical problematics of family life: relationship between family and professional life, the role of the State (codification of private space, taxation, social security, family policy), inter-generational ties, alternative parenting (single parent, multiple parents, gay parenting), divorce (breaking up, living alone, recomposed families), violence (conjugal, parental, against children), gender equality, division of domestic labor. We expect that speakers from the profession will come enrich reflection with presentations of empirical studies.
Written notes :  Students will depend for guidance in the class upon a file of readings (articles) which will be made available by the teacher.
Assessment :  Written examination covering the entire class.
