Course contents :  This course follows the development of Freudian thought, and introduces the fundamental concepts of dynamic psychology. We will study certain fundamental texts and comment on them. Students will be able to see how the main concepts are interrelated and the logic that led to their establishment. This should enable students to measure as a result their soundness and usefulness in a clinical context. The course is thus focused on the present-day usefulness of Freudian concepts and the manner in which they allow us to account for certain clinical phenomena, but also their limitations. We will also try to show how the various movements that followed upon Freudian psychoanalysis amount to so many attempts to overcome difficulties that were associated with the basic Freudian model.
Course objective :  To give students precise information in as complete a manner as possible about hypotheses and methodology employed by Freud, and about the main currents that stemmed from his work, such that students will be better able to work with the abundant literature that deals with these questions. The course is a kind of initiation that should enable students to pursue their own research aims in this area.
