MECA0017-1  Control system for land vehicles
Duration :  30h Th, 30h Pr
Credits/ECTS :
civil engineering in electromechanics, 3rd year5
Master in Mechanical Engineering, in-depth approach, 2nd yearDeuxième quadrimestre5
Holder(s) :  Pierre Duysinx
Language :  Langue française
Course contents :  Nowadays, automotive vehicles have turned into complex electromechanical systems or mechatronics systems, in which mechanics, electronics and software are closely related. These devices are embarqued in the vehicle to make it as an intelligent system. The goal of the lecture is to introduce the principles of these new components. As these ones resort more and more often to miniaturisation and microsystems, an introduction is also provided to this new domain.

The following topics will be visited:

  • Introduction and motivation
  • Control of the vehicle dynamics: cruise control, anti lock bracking systems (ABS), anti skid, control of lateral dyanmics (ESP), active and semi-active suspensions.
  • Passive security systems: airbags
  • Motorization control: hybrid electric vehicle management,
  • Introduction to MEMS and their applications to vehicular systems,
  • Intelligent transportation systems: active cruise control, Automated Highway systems, open telematics.
Course objective :  The goal of this lecture is to introduce the principles of the novel mechatronic systems used in modern in order to control the dynamics of vehicles and their propulsion systems.
Prerequisites :  Performance and dynamics of vehicles. Control systems.
Workshops :
  • Computer exercices in Matlab-Simulink or SAMCEF MECANO
  • Documentation collection
  • Case studies
  • Seminars by specialists and industry people
Organization :  The lectures are given at the second quadrimester (from February to May) in 15 periods of 4 hours. Exam in June
Written notes :
  • Copy of slides
  • Copy of papers and book chapters
