Course contents :  Historical and theoretical introduction to main currents of literary criticism in France, from Sainte-Beuve to Barthes: postulates, objects, methods.
In the second part, questions of literary criticism vs. theory will be examined.

Prerequisites :  Basic knowledge of the main concepts of the theory of language and literary theory.
Organization :  15 hours of theory and 15 hours of practical work.

A bibliography will be distributed, picking up on the essential texts of the main currents in the history of French literary criticism.

Remarks :  From 2004-2005, the course in Literary Theory and Criticism will replace the course on French Stylistics and will be integrated into the BAC3 in French and Romance Language and Literature (compulsory) and Modern Languages and Literature (optional), from 2006.
