Course contents :  The course is devoted every year to the study either of a literary subject or of a given literary work (the readings of other Latin texts being not excluded to enrich the commentary and locate the work in its historic, cultural, stylistic and literary context). In collaboration with the students, the teacher elaborates an original translation for each of the studied text as well as a commentary pointing out the most remarkable aspects of the text. The reading of texts also involves the study of the most significant phenomena in the domains of the phonetics, the morphology, the lexicon and the syntax.

The student will prepare not only the translation of texts studied during the course, but also, for the examination at the end of year, the reading, the translation and the commentary of other texts. He will demonstrate his ability to use personally the methods and the techniques he learned during the course. The reading of scientific papers on the studied author or subject will also be expected.
Course objective :  A practice in the translation and in the grammatical, historic, cultural, stylistic and literary commentary of Latin authors of the end of the republican period and the beginning of imperial period, as well as a review of the Latin language structures.
Prerequisites :  Bac 2 Readings in Latin authors course
Organization :  Duration : 30h th.

Learning methods : lectures and practice, homework including reading of scientifics studies.
Written notes :  Notes supplied by the teacher and critical editions of the texts.
Assessment :  A homework and the review of scientific papers will be marked.

Oral examination at the end of the year : reading, translation and commentary of a text red during the course and of a text prepared at home (for this second text, the student will prepare also an introduction to the text). Will be marked the ability of the student : 1. to translate and justify grammatically his translation; 2. to refer to the bibliography; 3. to use personally the methods and the techniques he learned during the course.
